Wildcats drop second round series to Denham Springs

The No. 10 Destrehan Wildcats were eliminated from the Class 5A playoffs after back-to-back losses to No. 7 Denham Springs in the second round best-of-three series.

The Wildcats suffered a 10-2 loss in the first game, and fell 6-2 in the second game.

Despite the losses, Destrehan head coach Chris Mire said he was proud of the way his squad competed against a very good Denham Springs team.

“We showed the same grit that led us to 28 wins this season, but we just couldn’t take advantage of our limited opportunities on offense,” he said. “Very proud of our guys and very much looking forward to getting back after it this summer to start preparing for next season.”

In Game 1, the Wildcats took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning. Brennan Breaud got his team on the board after scoring on a wild pitch, and Nathan Pilutti singled to center field to bring home Brandon Wild to give the Wildcats the lead.

Denham Springs jumped back on top in the bottom of the inning on a two-RBI single, and put the game away in the bottom of the sixth with five runs to secure the 10-2 victory.

Pilutti led the Wildcats from the plate going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Breaud went 2-for-4 while Kohen Granier, Louis Kieffer and Miles Patureau each recorded hits.

Logan Babin suffered the loss after giving up six hits and seven runs in five innings. He struck out two in the game.

In the second game, the Wildcats took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning off a triple by Pilutti and a single by Granier.

The Wildcats held the lead until the top of the fifth when Denham Springs scored four runs to jump on top 4-2.

Denham Springs extended their lead with a solo run in the fifth and brought another runner across the plate in the seventh to take the 6-2 victory.

Pilutti led the Wildcats from the plate after going 1-for-2 with an RBI. Granier went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Dane Simon, Kieffer and Patureau each had hits in the game.
