Unbeaten Wildcats best Braves as Robicheaux wins No. 150

Destrehan netted head coach Stephen Robicheaux his 150th career victory — and did it with flash.

The Wildcats rolled to a 48-27 victory over visiting H.L. Bourgeois(3-5, 1-3) on Destrehan’s senior night, clinching a share of the District 7-5A championship for DHS while setting up a chance to win the league outright next week at Thibodaux. Both teams are unbeaten in district play.

For the second straight week, Kristian Mosley kick-started the Wildcats offense by scoring on a long touchdown run, his 85-yarder giving his team the lead early. While Bourgeois tied the game 7-7, J.R. Blood connected with Justin Jefferson for an 87-yard score — from there, Destrehan never looked back.

“Our kids are resilient,” said Robicheaux. “(Bourgeois) got a big pass for a touchdown to tie the game and we had the response. It’s a big win for us and we’re excited to set up the big showdown next week with Thibodaux).”

The Wildcats are now 8-0 this season and have an opportunity next week to extend their run of unbeaten regular seasons to four in a row.

After H.L. Bourgeois scored a touchdown midway the second quarter to pull within two scores of Destrehan, 28-13, the Wildcats landed a massive knockout punch—specifically by the hand of Mosley. The senior tailback added yet another explosive scoring play to his growing collection when he returned the ensuing kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown. Bourgeois fumbled away its next possession to immediately give Destrehan the ball back, and Mosley capped DHS’ next drive with a 7-yard score to make it 41-13 before halftime.

“He’s been doing it all year,” said Robicheaux. “He’s a special player. He just needs a little bit of a crease and he can go. He’s got such great speed. The offensive line did a tremendous job tonight. Our receivers did a good job blocking down field. And he just made it happen.”

Mike Young added a touchdown run on an end-around for the Wildcats’ lone second half score.

Sophomore quarterback J.R. Blood finished with three touchdown passes on the night.

At the close of the game, Destrehan put senior quarterback Kohen Granier in to take the final kneel down as the Wildcats ran out the clock. After a hot start to his senior season, Granier was injured in the fourth week of the season against Hahnville and hasn’t played since. While Friday saw the last snap Granier will see in a regular season home game at Wildcat Stadium, Robicheaux doesn’t believe it was his last play as a Wildcat.

“We’re real excited to see Kohen come in at the end and take a knee … just see him on field, to see him in uniform,” Robicheaux said. “His days are not over. We think we’re gonna get him back later on. Blood has done a tremendous job in his absence, and if he and our running backs continue to produce like that, we’ll have a shot to go pretty far.”

As far as his own personal milestone, Robicheaux deflected the praise from himself onto his program.

“That’s not about me. It’s not a win for me. That’s a win for this program,” Robicheaux said. “I just happened be the face in front of the program for last 15 years. That’s for every assistant coach, every guy who ever played here. We talk about it all the time. This program is most important thing. The kids believe, the coaches believe, and that’s why this is such a special place.”
