After limiting out on speckled trout in Cocodrie, Hunter McDonald, Jake Cologne and Taylor “TJ” Joyce headed back to try their luck again. This time they wanted to catch limits of redfish.
“Last week we limited out on 12-to-16-inch speckled trout by following the birds. The birds locate the shrimp and the speckled trout follow the school of shrimp,” Cologne said. “We threw plastic under a cork and had a great time.”
The trio bought market shrimp at the boat launch and headed into the water in Cologne’s 17-foot Gator Trax, which allowed the fishermen to access shallow water and go into areas most boats cannot reach. Their strategy was to find birds working clear water and fish the high tide change.
They headed out to an area in Lake Quitman, which has a series of islands around the entire lake. While on the water, the three fishermen kept a vigilant eye out for birds but only found two birds working a small area. They quickly approached the spot and drifted down wind through the birds without catching a speck.
McDonald was throwing an H&H gold spinner with a Blue Moon Terror Tail on a 1/8 jig head while Jake used a ¼ ounce jig head baited with market shrimp under a cork. Joyce threw a gold spoon. The tide range was going to be 1.3 and was on the rise, but the trout were not cooperating. So the trio moved to a point along the islands and used the trolling motor to fish the shoreline. They began catching 16-inch redfish.
Around 10:30 a.m., the tide began to change from high to low and the action picked up. At the end of the fishing trip, the trio had caught 15 redfish and one lonesome speckled trout.
Getting to Cocodrie is an easy trip to make and the marina is located 63 miles southwest of Luling. To get there, take Highway 90 west to Highway 182 for 22 miles and then take Exit 210 towards Houma. Turn left on Highway 182 for 3.5 miles to Highway 3087 for 5 miles and cross the Prospect Bridge, which goes over the Intercoastal Canal. Go through the second red light, which crosses Bayou Terrebonne.
Turn left onto Highway 24 and it later turns into Highway 56 for 28 miles. It takes about 1 hour and 25 minutes to get to the Cocodrie Marina from Luling.
