Hahnville High to host GCAC track and field championships, Tigers alum returns to former home track

Kevell Byrd

Hahnville High School will play host to the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference track and field championship meet this weekend, while a record-breaking alum returns to the track she knows quite well.

The event takes place Friday and Saturday for both men’s and women’s teams. Among the schools competing will be Dillard, for which Hahnville High alum Kevell Byrd will compete. Byrd has already set several Dillard school records on the indoor track and will now take aim at conference championship honors on the track she called home only a year ago.

Along with Dillard, Fisk, Philander, Rust and Tougaloo will be competing for the men’s and women’s championships.

The Dillard men’s team is the official host among the schools.

On Friday, several field events will take place starting at 2 p.m. Then, on Saturday, the day kicks off at 10 a.m. with the women’s 4×100 relay and roll on to the day’s scheduled end at 5 p.m. for the official awards presentation.

In just her first year at Dillard, Byrd has set school records in the indoor 200 and 400-meter dash events, as well as the indoor 60 meters.

She’s kept the momentum going on the outdoor track. She is the fourth ranked 200m sprinter, the fifth ranked 400m sprinter and the sixth ranked 100m sprinter in the country. She is also part of the ninth ranked 4×400 relay team and 11th ranked 4×100 relay team. As a team, the Dillard women are ranked 24th in the country by the USTFCCCA Coaches’ Poll.
