Tigers jelling in hot start

The Hahnville volleyball team returned all of its players from last season. That cohesion has shown through the Tigers’ hot start to the 2016 season. Hahnville entered the week with a 6-1 mark, staying unbeaten until its seventh match of the season. “I definitely think having a two-year journey with the same people together has brought all of us closer,” said Hahnville coach Mendi LeBoeuf said. “Everyone is more mature. I think that reflects in our play so far. Nobody panics, they keep our process going and they’re confident,”

Hahnville’s earned a key victory came at home against Terrebonne Wednesday, a thrilling come from behind victory by scores of 27-29, 16-25, 26-24, 25-13 and 15-13.

Kylie Roux racked up 31 kills in the match to go with 15 digs and two aces. Ellie Bergeron had 48 assists and nine digs. Alli Plaisance had 15 digs and Gabby Constant had 13 digs. Stephanie Oubre made 13 kills.

LeBoeuf said she felt the close win in the third game represented a major momentum swing.

“We consistently worked hard and together through the entire match and I think for us to win that third set, it really lifted our confidence,” LeBoeuf said. “On the other side of it, they had a chance to put us away and we were able to keep it going, and that can be deflating. Winning it so close completely swung momentum in our direction.”

It was a dominant effort from Roux, who has hit the ground running after leading the team in hitting last season.

“Ellie played a strong game with 48 assists, and then Ellie had 31 of those kills,” LeBouef said. “To account for such a high percentage of those finishes shows the kind of day she had.”

The Tigers hit the road last week to face host Morgan City in the Tigers’ season opener. Hahnville came away with a decisive sweep, 25-16, 25-23 and 25-14.

Roux made 13 kills and served two aces. Bergeron had 27 assists and Oubre had 10 kills.

The Tigers begin play today at the H.L. Bourgeois tournament, which will be contested through Saturday. On Tuesday, Hahnville travels to East Ascension for non-district action.

Hahnville went 3-1 at the weekend’s SouthLouisiana Invitational tournament at Broadmoor, besting Livona, Baton Rouge-Central and Ben Franklin. St. Michael handed the team its first loss of the season on Saturday.
