Tigers hold on for 63-53 overtime win over Bourgeois

The Hahnville Tigers picked up an impressive overtime victory over H.L. Bourgeois last week, but the squad was unable to fight back from a 24-point deficit on Monday in a 68-58 loss to Central Lafourche.

Against Bourgeois, the Tigers led for most of the game, building up a 21-13 lead at the half. Hahnville held on to a 34-26 lead heading into the final quarter, but the Braves stormed back in the fourth quarter by outscoring the Tigers 21-13 to take a three-point lead with 4.4 seconds left in the game.

But the Tigers weren’t going away quietly. Juwan Green nailed a three-pointer to send the game into overtime, and Hahnville outscored Bourgeois 16-6 in the extra period for a 63-53 win.

Hahnville head coach Jerry Hernandez said it was a very gutsy performance by his team.

“The key to the win was our ability to come back after losing a lead that we held pretty much the whole game,” he said. “H.L. Bourgeois is a good ball club and they did a great job of getting back into the game and even taking the lead.”

Hernandez said he was proud of his team for keeping their composure throughout the entire game.

“We certainly did that to get Juwan Green a shot to tie it and he buried it,” Hernandez said. “We then outscored them 16-6 in overtime. That impressed me.”

Jamal Smith led the Tigers to the victory by scoring 22 points. Green finished with 18 points, while Timothy Roberts added nine points.

After their big win against Bourgeois, the Tigers got off to a slow start in their 68-58 loss to Central Lafourche on Monday.

At one point, the Tigers trailed by 24 points in the second half, though they managed to cut the Central Lafourche lead down to three points with two minutes left to play.

“We had a poor three quarters and a good fourth quarter, but you can’t get behind by 24 points in the second half,” Hernandez said. “We gave up too many second shots and layups.”

Shawn Maher led the Tigers with 16 points while Green finished with 15 points. Jamal Smith added 13 points in the loss.

Hernandez was also disappointed that his squad turned the ball over late in the game when they had a chance to cut the lead to one or tie. He said his squad must improve in their defensive rebounding and can’t fall behind early in order to have success in their remaining district games.

The Tigers are currently 10-9 on the season with a 3-3 district record.
