Tigers fall in semifinals of competitive St. Charles Shootout

Destrehan goes 1-2 in annual tourney

The Hahnville Lady Tigers advanced to the semifinals of the St. Charles Shootout before falling to Dominican 53-35. John Curtis won the tournament after beating Dominican 44-31 in the finals.

“Dominican shot the ball very well from start to finish,” Hahnville head coach Kevin Robicheaux said. “We had a hand in their face but it seemed like it didn’t matter. They were definitely the better team and deserved to play for the tournament championship.”

Hahnville did finish the tournament with a 2-1 record, beating Terrebonne twice. The Lady Tigers knocked off Terrebonne 41-35 in the first game.

Terrebonne led 24-22 after the third quarter, but Hahnville outscored them 19-11 in the fourth quarter to pick up the win.

In the second game, a 40-38 Lady Tiger victory, Hahnville held a 36-26 fourth-quarter lead, but Terrebonne rallied in the end before falling short.

“As a whole, our team has played well in spurts, but we have yet to play four quarters of basketball,” Robicheaux said. “I guess the main thing we are lacking is consistency. We have not played consistent basketball up to this point.”

One of the reasons for that is the lack of practice time Robicheaux’s team has had. In previous seasons, teams were allowed to begin practicing at the beginning of October. Now, teams must start at the end of October.

“This lack of practice time does not allow me and my assistant coaches a chance to work on those fundamentals needed to play at a consistent level,” Robicheaux said. “Then less than two weeks after practice begins, we are at Thibodaux in a jamboree.

“This is just not enough time to practice and correct mistakes.”

The Lady Tigers will travel to Sam Houston this weekend to participate in the Rumble on the Bluff tournament.

Destrehan was also a co-host in the St. Charles Shootout, and the Lady Cats won their first game by knocking off South Lafourche 28-20. However, Destrehan would drop their next two games.

They fell to eventual champion John Curtis 49-34, then lost to Mt. Carmel 50-35.
