Tiger, Wildcat on All-State first team, 3 named honorable mention

Destrehan linebacker Rae Juan Marbley and Hahnville punter Craig Ford were both named to the Class 5A All-State first team by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.

Three other Destrehan players, including junior receiver Alfred Smith, senior quarterback Donovan Isom and junior running back Will Matthews, received All-State honorable mention.

Marbley had a huge year for the Wildcats and was named the defensive MVP for District 7-5A. He finished the season with 137 tackles in 14 games, including 16 tackles for loss. He also recorded a sack, one interception, two pass breakups, a fumble recovery and a touchdown.

As a punter, Ford also did his fair share of damage for the Hahnville Tigers. Ford averaged 39.33 yards-per-punt with eight punts downed inside the 20-yard-line. Though Ford made the team as a punter, he was also successful as a kicker. He finished the season with an average of 64 yards per kickoff with 75 percent of his kicks going for touchbacks. He also nailed 96 percent of his point after tries and hit 75 percent of his field goals with a long of 50 yards.

The honorable mention selections from Destrehan were just as impressive as the first-team selections.

Isom quarterbacked the Wildcats to a 12-2 record in 2013 and was named the offensive MVP of District 7-5A. He completed 163 of his 248 passes for 2,653 yards and 33 touchdowns. On the ground, Isom rushed for 530 yards and nine touchdowns on 82 carries.

Matthews powered a strong Destrehan ground attack by rushing for 1,384 yards on 162 carries while scoring 21 touchdowns. He also had 260 receiving yards.

Smith led the Wildcats in receiving after catching 54 passes for 872 yards and seven touchdowns. He also rushed for 72 yards and a touchdown on only six carries.
