Two former Hahnville High School softball players helped lead Spring Hill College to a second-place finish in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.
It was the highest finish by any athletic team in the school’s 170-year history.
Elise deBruler and Taylor Webre, who led Hahnville to its first softball state championship during their senior seasons in 2011, played in all 66 games for Spring Hill, who finished with a 49-17 record.
deBruler hit .297 for Spring Hill while recording 73 RBIs on seven doubles and four home runs. Webre finished the season with a .275 batting average while recording nine doubles, two triples and four home runs. She had 72 RBIs.
The Spring Hill Badgers, from Mobile, Ala., advanced to the post season after finishing as runner-up in the Southern States Athletic Conference. Following a loss to SC-Beaufort in the opening round of the NAIA regionals, the Badgers cruised to seven consecutive victories to win the regional and advance deep into the national tournament, which was held in Columbus, Ga.
The only two losses Spring Hill suffered in the national tournament where to eventual champion Concordia University.
In addition to starting every game for Spring Hill, sophomores deBruler and Webre were named to the SSAC All-Academic Team.
Spring Hill College is the oldest Catholic university in the south and the fifth oldest Catholic university in the country. The college is listed among the top 20 colleges in the south by US News & World Report.
