The St. Charles Parish Recreation Department is now registering for the new Shooting Stars Basketball program, designed for children ages 5 to 18 with disabilities. Registration is free of charge.
The program follows the spring implementation of the Challenger Baseball program for children with disabilities, which boasted high participation and interest.
The Shooting Stars Basketball program is another example of parish administration’s efforts to develop a comprehensive parks and recreation program that provides an array of services for all citizens.
“We’re excited about being able to offer these deserving children a chance to play sports year-round,” Parish President V.J. St. Pierre Jr. said. “With the success of the baseball program, we know these games will be well-received and well-attended.”
Games are flexible and tailored to the players’ individual abilities. Teams are organized according to player abilities rather than ages. Each player is paired with a “buddy” to encourage and assist them on the court as needed.
The St. Charles Parish Recreation Department has planned a six-game season with a break over the Thanksgiving holidays. The first game is scheduled for 6 p.m. Oct. 29 at the Harry Hurst Middle School gymnasium on River Road in Destrehan. Registration forms will be accepted until that time.

Those interested in coaching one of the basketball teams or being a player’s “buddy” are asked to contact Miller. “Buddies” can earn community service hours for their time helping players.
