Richard receives All-American honors by national organization

Former Destrehan High School and current Georgia Tech standout defensive tackle Darryl Richard was named a second-team academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Richard, a 6-4, 290 pound junior defensive lineman, is Georgia Tech’s first academic All-American since punter Dan Dyke in 2002.

In 2007 Richard recorded 26 tackles, 10 ½ tackles for losses, 4 ½ quarterback sacks and he forced 1 fumble.

Richard already holds a degree in business management at Georgia Tech with a 3.52 grade point average and currently is taking classes for his master’s degree.

The talented defensive lineman was also named a finalist for the 2007 Danny Wuerffel Trophy which is given each year to the college player who best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.

Richard lost out to Tulsa quarterback Paul Smith for the Wuerffel Award last week.

The Georgia Tech star defensive lineman has one more year of college eligibility and he is considered one of the top interior defensive linemen who would be available for the 2009 NFL draft.

Richard and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets will play Fresno State on December 31, 2007 in the Roady’s Humanitarian Bowl in Boise, Idaho.
