Reed gets shot at first Super Bowl

Former Destrehan High School star free safety Ed Reed will go down as one of the greatest defensive players to ever come out of Louisiana, but one thing the nine-time Pro Bowler has never done is play in a Super Bowl.

For the second straight year, Reed and the Baltimore Ravens will have to beat the New England Patriots for a shot at a Super Bowl berth and it would be in Reed’s home state of Louisiana if the Ravens can pull off the upset.

The Baltimore Ravens upset Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos 38-35 in double-overtime to again face off against the Patriots and Tom Brady this coming weekend.

With the Ravens trailing by a touchdown with less than a minute to play in regulation, Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco connected with former Abramson High School wide receiver Jacoby Jones on a 70-yard touchdown pass to put the game in overtime.

After a scoreless first period of overtime, Ravens placekicker Justin Tucker kicked a 47-yard field goal to give the Ravens and future NFL Hall of Fame safety Reed another shot at an elusive Super Bowl berth.

The Ravens victory overshadowed a great performance by former LSU running back/return man Trindon Holliday.

The 5-foot-5, 180-pound return man for the Broncos brought back a punt 90 yards for a touchdown, a new NFL postseason record, and then returned a kickoff 104 yards for a touchdown, another postseason record.

In the NFC, the San Francisco 49ers will face off against the “Dirty Birds” of Atlanta. Former Second Ward High School standout quarterback Terry Robiskie, who played his college football at LSU, is now the wide receivers coach for the Falcons.

Robiskie was the offensive coordinator for the Oakland Raiders when they defeated the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl XVIII.
