Even though Hahnville or Destrehan weren’t playing in the Superdome on Saturday, the Class 3A state championship game had a local flavor as five players from St. Charles Parish made critical plays to lead the St. Charles Catholic Comets to a 9-8 victory over Amite.
It was the first state championship in the school’s history.
In a low-scoring affair, the Comets took a 9-0 lead and held off a late Amite rally in the fourth quarter to claim the title. St. Charles Catholic’s only touchdown of the day was set up after defensive lineman Taylor Cochran, from St. Rose, blocked an Amite punt.
Luling’s Brandon Zimmer then ran for a 3-yard touchdown to give the Comets a 6-0 lead.
On Amite’s next offensive possession, Ross Authement came through with a huge interception at the 42-yard line and brought the ball all the way back to Amite’s 8-yard line. Though the Comets were unable to punch the ball into the end zone, Patrick Juneau, from Destrehan, nailed a field goal that ended up being the game winner.
Amite’s only score came with 7:46 left in the game on a 5-yard run by quarterback Reginald Porter.
Before allowing that score, the Comets defense was relentless. Linebacker Dante Scarpero, from St. Rose, had a big game finishing with 5 ½ tackles, two for loss and a sack. Zimmer also came through with momentum-changing fumble recovery.
