Off to College…and Beyond

This week’s Off to College and Beyond Player of the Week is Southern Illinois defensive back and HHS grad Craig Turner who had 11 tackles, 2 pass deflections, a forced fumble, an 18-yard kick return and 13-yard punt return in the Salukis’ loss to Montana on Saturday.

Bullock leads Falcons in rushing
Bowling Green running back and DHS grad Chris Bullock led the Falcons in rushing this season with 769 and 4 touchdowns on 160 carries. He also caught 14 passes for 119 yards and had an 11-yard kick return.

Landry leads Tigers in tackles
LSU safety and HHS grad Laron Landry led the Tigers this season with 68 tackles. He also had 2 interceptions for 26 yards, a sack, 4 pass deflections, 3.5 tackles for a loss, 4 quarterback hurries, a forced fumble, a blocked kick and a punt return for 9 yards.

Lee 2nd in total yards for Jaguars
Despite only playing in 5 games this season, Southern quarterback and HHS grad Bryant Lee was second on the Jaguars in total yards, rushing yards and passing. He finished the season with 873 total yards. He rushed for 302 yards and 5 touchdowns while completing 51 of 87 passes for 571 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Reynaud totals 157 yards
West Virginia wide receiver and HHS grad Darius Reynaud had 157 total yards in the Mountainers’ victory over Rutgers on Saturday. In the game he had 5 kickoff returns for 130 yards, a reception for 26 yards and a carry for a yard.

Smith leads Wave in returns
Tulane kick returner and DHS grad Fred Smith finished the season leading the Green Wave in kick and punt return yardage. He returned 25 kicks for 487 yards and 22 punts for 191 yards. He also caught 2 passes for 13 yards.

Stewart leads Gold Rush in win
Xavier guard and DHS grad Mark Stewart led the Gold Rush with 21 points in their victory over Huston-Tillotson on Saturday. He also had 2 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals in the game. Last Tuesday, he also had 15 points, 2 rebounds and 3 assists.

Wilson leads Panthers in rushing
Prairie View A&M running back and Destrehan native Kerry Wilson led the Panthers in rushing this season with 498 yards and 4 touchdowns on 83 carries. He also had 5 receptions for 41 yards.

Basketball Notes
Southern Miss guard and DHS grad Amber Eugene had 12 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and a block in the Lady Golden Eagles’ loss last Tuesday. Mississippi College guard and DHS grad Jaszmine Eugene had 21 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and a steal in three games last week. Belhaven guard and DHS grad Meagan Stock had 15 points, 3 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals and a block in two games last week.

Football Notes
Several players ended the regular college football season last week. Here are some of their season stats: Tennessee tight end and Destrehan native Chris Brown finished with 24 receptions for 173 yards and a touchdown; Rhodes College tight end and HHS grad Brad Muller finished with 4 receptions for 22 yards. This weekend also featured some solid performances from local players in college and at the professional level. Those included: Baltimore Ravens’ safety and HHS grad Dawan Landry had 5 tackles and a sack; UCLA running back and Luling native Chris Markey had 20 carries for 51 yards and a reception for 17 yards; Louisiana-Lafayette defensive lineman and former DHS student Korey Raymond had 4 tackles and a blocked kick; Baltimore Ravens’ safety and DHS grad Ed Reed had 5 tackles and a pass deflection; Georgia Tech defensive lineman and DHS grad Darryl Richard had 2 tackles, one for a loss of 3 yards; San Diego Chargers’ punter and DHS grad Mike Scifres had 6 punts for an average of 41.7 yards with 3 inside the 20-yard line and Arkansas cornerback and DHS grad Darius Vinnett had 4 tackles, one for a loss.
