Hahnville High School standout running back Sergio Medina was known for his quick moves on the field and last week one of the state’s top all-purpose athletes decided to switch his verbal commitment from North Texas to Tulane University.
The 5-foot-11, 210-pounder, who rushed for over 1,000 yards and 17 touchdowns in just six games at halfback after starting the season at linebacker, gave his verbal commitment to Tulane head coach Curtis Johnson late last week.
“The last two to three weeks Tulane has been contacting me a lot,” Medina said. “They really like my versatility at running back and also me playing linebacker. I just fell in love with the school. I like being closer to home and getting a Tulane education is high on my list also. I will either major in business or engineering. They have great programs in both fields.”
Medina is expected to play outside linebacker at Tulane, but offensive coaches are lobbying him to play halfback.
Hahnville High School head coach Lou Valdin says that Medina is a great team player and a tremendous athlete.
“When we called him in and told him we needed him to play tailback he told me he was fine with the move,” Valdin said. “He’s a team oriented player. Sergio is just a great athlete. He can play halfback, safety or linebacker at the next level. Pound for pound, he is the strongest player we’ve ever had at Hahnville. “
Medina joins another River Parish football standout in St. Charles Catholic High School defensive end/outside linebacker Luke Jackson, who verbally committed to Tulane early in the recruiting process.
