The defensive players for the River Region all-stars found out what most of the Bayou area folks have been well aware of for quite some time – Vandebilt Catholic High School quarterback Elijah McGuire is a special football player.
The leading rusher in the state of Louisiana in 2012 played just two quarters in the all-star classic, but he totaled 118 yards rushing and two touchdowns. He also added 57 yards passing in the Bayou’s 34-0 victory over the River Region all-stars.
McGuire was selected the Bayou Region’s MVP for his efforts and he had players and coaches alike shaking their heads with his performance on the field.
“He’s someone that is virtually impossible to scheme against because he can make so many plays on his own and his running skills, speed and power skills are just a cut above,” said River Region all-star head coach John Lambert. “Throw in the fact that he is also a good passer and once he got hot we just could never find a way to slow him down. Defensively their pass rush also was outstanding all night.”
The River Region all-stars had immense trouble slowing down the pass rush of South Lafourche High School standout defensive end Chris Berry, who recorded seven tackles and four sacks.
East St. John High School quarterback Leonard Davis, who has verbally committed to play for Tulane University, earned MVP honors for the River Region after rushing for 60 yards and passing for 105 yards.
Those in the St. Charles Parish area who have AT&T U-Verse will be able to watch the game at 1 p.m. on Dec. 29 and Dec. 30 and 1 p.m. on Jan. 5 and Jan. 6.
