The Destrehan Lady Wildcats have been unstoppable on the court and improved their district record to 9-0 after victories over South Lafourche, H.L. Bourgeois and East St. John.
Destrehan (22-1) had little trouble with South Lafourche in their 67-37 win. Cara Ursin led the Lady Wildcats to the victory with 21 points. Brandi Mason finished with 16 points while Jordan Dabney added 10 points.
“I think the girls played well. South Lafourche is a competitive team and going into this game we wanted to stay focused on the game and not our overall record,” Destrehan head coach Angi Butler said. “I was impressed with the way the girls handled themselves. We struggled with the amount of fouls we had received and by halftime I had four of my five starters in foul trouble.
“With being on the road and the calls we weren’t getting, the girls stayed composed and handled themselves well.”On Saturday, the Lady Wildcats stayed perfect in district play with another big win, this time knocking off H.L. Bourgeois by a 76-44 score. It was the most points Destrehan has scored this season.
“I was proud of the girls’ offensive play. We were more consistent off the block and more aggressive under the goal,” Butler said. “Our determination to work harder offensively created the opportunity for us to get some of those second chance rebounds and turn them into offensive points.”
Dabney led Destrehan to the victory with 20 points. Ursin added 17 points while Bailee Lipps and Brandi Mason both finished with eight points. Still, it was her squad’s ability to play as a team that Butler credits with the 32-point win.
“Even the fans from the opposing teams have stopped me to comment on how well our team works together and how disciplined they are on the court. This speaks volumes,” Butler said. “It goes to prove that not only do our fans notice how well this team has come together, but so does everyone else’s.”
On Monday night, the Lady Wildcats continued to thrash opponents, this time beating East St. John 72-44.
Destrehan took a 31-25 lead at the break before blowing the game open in the fourth quarter by outscoring East St. John 26-11.
Ursin was phenomenal in the game, scoring 27 points to lead all scorers.
The Lady Wildcats have now won 19-straight games and Butler believes her team will continue to be able to handle the pressure associated with such a long winning streak.
“We talk about how well we’ve been playing, how far we’ve come over the past four years and what our goals are for this season. I am constantly reminding the girls to be proud of their accomplishments, but at the same time, each day is a new day and we must humble ourselves and be cognizant that every team is beatable,” Butler said. “With that in mind, we leave the locker room before each game 0-0.”
