Lady Wildcats knock off East St. John 53-36 for 12th straight win

Destrehan will travel to Hahnville on Friday

The Destrehan Lady Wildcats won their 12th straight game and improved to 2-0 in district play with a 53-36 win over East St. John on Friday.

Cara Ursin led Destrehan (15-1, 2-0) to the win after finishing with 21 points.

Destrehan held an 11-9 lead after the first quarter but started to pull away in the second. Brandi Mason scored the Lady Wildcats first six points in the quarter and Ursin added five more to pace a 12-2 run that stretched the Destrehan lead to 29-12 at the break.

East St. John kept things closer in the third and fourth quarters, but the Lady Wildcats outscored East St. John 14-10 in the final quarter to wrap up the win.

Along with 21 points, Ursin finished with 12 rebounds and three steals. Mason added 16 points and Jordan Dabney finished with 10.

Though Destrehan’s win over district foe East St. John was impressive, Lady Wildcat head coach Angi Butler said it was not one of her team’s better games.

“We struggled to make easy baskets and our free throw percentage was not what we had hoped for considering we had spent a great deal of time focusing on that aspect of our game,” she said.

However, Butler said it was extremely important that her team got the district win to improve to 2-0.“We wanted to set the tone for the rest of the season,” she said.

As for Ursin’s play, Butler said that she was the catalyst behind the Destrehan victory.

“She played great defense and caused ESJ to turn over the ball on multiple occasions,” she said. “I am expecting great things from her, as well as all my athletes, as the season progresses.”

Butler has been impressed with every player on her team as they stretched their win streak to double digits.

“The girls have really come together as a team this season and their strong chemistry is evident on and off the court,” she said. “They understand how important it is to play as a team in order to reach the goals we have put in place for this season. We are hoping to bring home another district title, as well as become one of the top teams in the state. In order for this to happen all players must stay focused and learn how to utilize each others individual talents in order to benefit the team as a whole.”

The Lady Wildcats will take on rival Hahnville at 6:15 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 10. The game will be played at Hahnville.
