The Hahnville Lady Tigers continued to roll through the competition, knocking off both Dutchtown and St. Amant while tightening their grip on first place in District 6-5A.
Their game with Dutchtown was an epic showdown. The Lady Griffins hadn’t been challenged all year, with huge, double-digit wins in every one of their district games.
But the Lady Tigers changed all that.
Hahnville jumped out to an 11-3 lead in the first quarter, held Dutchtown to only nine points in the third quarter, then made free throws down the stretch to pull out a 48-46 win.
“I felt like going into the Dutchtown game that we would have to get off to a good start because Dutchtown hadn’t been in a competitive district game,” Hahnville head coach Kevin Robicheaux said. “That 11-3 first quarter was huge, and we just had a really good team effort.”
The win was even bigger considering it came on the road, Robicheaux said.
“You are dealing with a lot of elements when you travel and your entering a different environment,” he said. “We know we have to take care of our house, but its nice to be able to get these big wins on the road.”
Kaelynn Boyd led her team to the win with 17 points, while Rickell Preston added 12.
Robicheaux also singled out the play of Taylor Weber and Sydney Marshall.
“They are playing great for us right now on the post,” he said.
After their victory over Dutchtown, the Lady Tigers continued their win streak by knocking off St. Amant for the second time this season.
Once again Hahnville started strong, taking a 30-14 lead into halftime and cruising from there for a 57-39 victory.
Preston scored 11 points in the win, while DaJanel Dunmiles added nine points.
Robicheaux attributed his team’s hot streak to their defensive effort.
“We are playing really solid defense now and hold ing teams to one shot before getting the rebound,” he said. “We need to box out a little better, but we are playing with a lot of intensity on defense.”
