Lady Tigers pick up win over St. Amant in district opener

The Lady Tigers picked up a huge 46-29 win over St. Amant on the road Tuesday night in their first district game of the season.

Hahnville (10-9) actually trailed 10-6 after the first quarter, but once the team warmed up there was no stopping them. Led by KaeLynn Boyd, who finished with 23 points, the Tigers outscored St. Amant 14-6 in the second quarter to take a 20-16 lead.

Though both squads battled back and forth in the third, the Tigers never relinquished the lead and put the game away with a huge fourth quarter by outscoring St. Amant 18-5.

Hahnville head coach Kevin Robicheaux said the Lady Tigers played one of their most complete games of the year in the victory. He credited his bench with keeping the starters rested, which allowed for the big fourth-quarter run.

“I’m proud of how the girls played on both offense and defense,” Robicheaux said. “Getting a win in the first district game is always good, especially when you win on the road.

“You’re dealing with a different environment and this was just a great way to start our run towards a district championship.”

Along with 23 points from Boyd, the Lady Tigers also got some big plays from Shante Evans and Rea Fields.

Evans finished with 13 points, while Fields added six.

Before picking up an important win in the district opener, the Lady Tigers had suffered back-to-back losses to Dominican and Warren Easton. Hahnville fell to Dominican 42-37 in overtime, and dropped its game with Warren Easton 56-50 despite holding a 2-point lead with two minutes left in the game.

“We knew the two games against Dominican and Warren Easton were going to be tough, but the fact that the games were tough should get us ready for district,” Robicheaux said.
As always District 6-5A will be competitive, but Robicheaux believes his squad can hang with the best.

“I think the team to beat in district is Dutchtown, who has four starters returning,” Robicheaux said. “But East St. John is very athletic and Destrehan is young but skilled.
“We are up there with those teams and I feel the district will be competitive all the way around.”

The Lady Tigers will host East St. John on Friday. The JV will play at 6 p.m. and the varsity game will begin shortly after that game’s conclusion. The Lady Tigers will then travel to Dutchtown on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. showdown.

“Our team has come a long way and we have improved on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball,” Robicheaux said. “But we still have a long way to go.”
