Lady Tigers off to hot start

Mallory Laumann and her Destrehan teammates are pushing forward as district play begins.

Hahnville volleyball coach Mendi LeBouef set out to test her young team early and often in an effort to get her players up to speed. So far, that plan appears to be working on every level.

The Tigers played 14 matches through their first two weeks of the season and emerged with a record of 10-4, culminating with a strong performance at the H.L. Bourgeois tournament last weekend. HHS went 5-0 in pool play at the tourney before falling in bracket play to Belle Chasse in two games, 25-23 and 25-14.

“With a younger team, you’re going to have a lot of growing up to do,” LeBouef said. “And you aim for consistent growth throughout the season. We’ve played a lot of volleyball over the first couple of weeks and I think that’s paying off for us in a number of ways. Everyone seems to be feeling a little more comfortable with one another on the court.”

Kylie Roux and Ellie Bergeron are off to hot starts, the former the team’s leading hitter and the latter its setter.

“They’ve definitely been our leaders,” LeBouef said. “We’ve gone through them on offense. Defensively, it’s been a big team effort. We’ve been adjusting on that side as we go along.

District play is on the near horizon for the Tigers. After the team competes in the Morgan City tournament (set to be played today and Saturday), HHS returns to H.L. Bourgeois to open district play. Bourgeois earned the district championship last season, and LeBouef said she knows the opening district game will be a challenge. The two teams split in their two matches a year ago.

“We’ll be playing one of the better teams in our district, so that should set the tone,” LeBouef said. “It will be a really important game for us.”

At last weekend’s tournament, HHS bested St. James in a two game sweep, 25-16 and 25-13. Roux made seven kills, while Ellie Bergeron made 12 assists.

Against Ellender, the Tigers won 25-11 and 25-12. Oubre had eight kills, while Bergeron had 16 assists.

The Tigers took down Central Catholic in three games, 25-18, 27-29 and 15-11. Roux had 17 kills. Alyssa served four aces.

Hahnville bested AOL 25-23 and 25-23. Roux and Oubre combined for 17 kills. Bergeron had 22 assists and nine digs.

In HHS’ fifth and final win, it was a 25-10 and 25-9 win over South Lafourche. Bergeron had 20 assists, while Oubre had 10 kills.
