Lady Tigers must rebound from defeat to win ‘dog fight’ against Terrebonne

Even when they’re down by a substantial margin, Hahnville coach Phil Bychurch expects to see his young basketball team fight.

Bychurch said he did see that Tuesday night against arch-rival Destrehan. Down 18-1 in the first quarter, without a single shot from the field, the Lady Tigers still battled to the end of a 75-35 loss to the Wildcats. Janet Marshall eventually scored the Tigers’ first field goal with 3:02 remaining in the quarter to add to her one free throw. She would finish the game with 13 points. Yasah Gale finished with 11 points.

“I just want my kids to hustle and play hard,” Bychurch said. “They did. I can’t complain about that. We just didn’t put the ball in the hole enough.”

The Tigers (9-17, 4-7) have dropped two in a row now. They lost a tough road game to Thibodaux on Friday 46-38.

“We played very well,” Bychurch said. “Again, it came down to missed free throws and easy shots. We played very well against them both times we played them. We’ve gotten better. Then you have a game like tonight that’s a little setback. You want to play a little bit better than what we played tonight.”

The Tigers will travel to take on the Terrebonne Tigers on Friday. The last contest between the two went into overtime, with Hahnville taking a 56-52 win.

“That’s going to be a dog fight,” Bychurch said. “The last time we played them went into overtime. I’m not expecting anything different this time. I’m expecting very aggressive basketball play. So, we’ve got to get aggressive.”

Hahnville is led by its two seniors Bailee Kaplan and Marshall. Gale is a freshman.

“We need people to lead,” Bychurch said. “My freshmen are finally kind of growing.”
