Lady Tigers fall to DHS, ESJ but rebounds to beat Bourgeois

It’s been an up and down season for the Hahnville Lady Tigers.

Hahnville (8-14) destroyed Central Lafourche 50-18 to open district play, but the Lady Tigers have lost two of their last three district games.

Last week, Hahnville fell to Destrehan, 65-31, despite the fact that head coach Phillip Bychurch felt his team gave it all they had.

“We played hard and we didn’t quit. That’s all I can ask for,” Bychurch said. “Destrehan is a good team and they are hard to stop.”

Senior Bailee Kaplan led Hahnville with 10 points, while freshman Makaila Carter finished with eight points against Destrehan.

The next night, the Wildcats once again hit the road to face East St. John. The result was a 54-23 loss.

“We had a little trouble adapting to their defense. They beat us on the offensive boards too,” Bychurch said. “We didn’t play as aggressive as we had earlier in the week. I don’t know if it was because of the emotional loss [to Hahnville] the day before, but we didn’t play well at all.”East St. John took control early, with Darae Taylor leading her team to the win with 19 points.

Kaplan finished with eight points in the loss, while teammate Janet Marshall added seven points.

“We’ve played off and on all season,” Bychurch said. “Some nights we really play well and some nights we don’t, but we hustle and play hard. The shots just aren’t falling.”The Lady Tigers rebounded with a 59-30 win over H.L. Bourgeois on Tuesday, and Bychurch feels that his team will have more success this season if they can play more consistent basketball.

“I think we’ve gotten a lot more patient with the basketball now than how we were early in the season,” Bychurch said. “I lost a senior for the season due to injury and we are starting two freshmen, so we are getting over the adversity of all that and getting a little better with our patience.”
