Lady Cats crush Lady Tigers to remain perfect in district play

The Destrehan girls basketball team certainly has been on a roll this season.

Tuesday night, it rolled right over arch-rival Hahnville in a District 7-5A game in the packed R.K. Smith Middle School gym.

This one never was in doubt. Destrehan jumped to a 18-3 lead to start the game and never let up to take a 75-35 win. The Wildcats improved to 19-3 with the win, and maintained its perfect 11-0 district record. Destrehan has not lost since dropping a 56-42 decision to Salmen in the semifinals of the Sugar Bowl Prep Classic tournament on Jan. 10.

Jerlicia Morris led all scorers with 23 points. Cara Ursin finished with 20. Six other Wildcats added to Destrehan’s sixth game scoring 75 points or more.

Coach Angi Butler says these games are learning opportunities for her players.

“What we were trying to work on was running our plays,” Butler said. “We want to try to work on some of our offenses we haven’t run before. We have implemented some new offenses before we go into the playoffs because everybody’s got film. Our motion offense, we really wanted to work on, and then our rotation on our 1-2. When you have a lead like this, it gives you the time to be able to do some of that stuff so that you can perfect it before you really have to use it.”Likewise, on Friday the Lady Wildcats were able to get creative in an 83-44 win over Terrebonne.

“Everybody got some playing time,” Butler said.

But Friday night’s game at Thibodaux might be another story. Thibodaux held Destrehan to its lowest point total of the season and its second lowest margin of victory in a 37-30 decision for the Wildcats on Jan. 13.

“We didn’t play well against them the last time,” Butler said. “We won by seven, but we were 3-of-18 at the free throw line. So, we’ve really been working on our free throws, we’ve been working on our execution. It’s going to be a tough one at their place.”
