Huge catfish, bass biting in Cataouatche

Gary Hudson, a college buddy, called and setup a fishing trip to Lake Cataouatche after seeing replays of the Bass Master Classic.

“I figured it was time for me come down and visit for a while.” Hudson told me.

So last Friday morning we hooked-up the Kenner VX and headed to cuts along the north side of Lake Cataouatche. We were trying to catch 12 catfish for a fish fry.

We brought earthworms, chicken livers and gizzards. A lot of jug-line fishermen like chicken gizzards because they last a long time.

We found a spot down current from a cut in the lake and threw out three lines. One was baited with an earthworm, the other with chicken liver and the final line had chicken gizzard. Within five minutes we caught a 2-pound blue catfish on earthworms. Another 10 minutes went by and the middle rod, baited with chicken liver, bent over and almost touched the water.

The 7-foot Ugly Stick has an Okuma Epixor EF 55A-spinning reel with 50-pound braid rigged with a ¾ ounce weight and a #1 catfish hook.

We call it the “Gorilla Rod.”

If we had a big catfish, I knew the rod could handle it.
“Fishing in the current along Lake Cataouatche, you never know what to expect.” Hudson said.

Sure enough, 15 minutes later Hud raised the big catfish into the boat.

“Man I’m ready to catch bass,” he said. “We have been here for less than 30 minutes and this is unbelievable.”

I convinced him to stay for two more catfish before we went out and fished for bass.

Starting in the Louisiana Cypress Canal, I threw the watermelon/red baby brush hog and Hud threw the larger watermelon/red brush hog.

Most of the bass we caught were on the western side of the La Cypress Canal.

Before the day was over, we caught more than 20 bass and released all of them.  Most of the fish were caught on the Watermelon/red baby brush hog.

‘”This is an amazing place to fish!” Hudson said.
