HHS wrestler finishes 2nd at national championship

Hahnville High School wrestler Nicholas Lirette impressed at the Brute Nationals Wrestling Championship in Independence, Mo., finishing second in the 115-pound weight class for those in the 10th grade.

Lirette’s finish earned him All-American status at the meet, which attracts top wrestlers from around the nation to determine who is the best in their respective weight classes.

This is just another accolade for Lirette, who won the state championship in freestyle at the USA Wrestling State Tournament last year. USA Wrestling is the same organization that puts on Olympic wrestling.

Lirette also won the District 7-5A championship in the 113-pound weight division in February.

After winning the district title, Lirette advanced to the finals of the high school state championship before losing to No. 1 seed Steven Shields of Brother Martin.

Hahnville head wrestling coach Dan Erwin said that Lirette has an impressive work ethic.

“He trains like no one I’ve ever seen. He wakes up and trains, goes to practice and outworks everyone and comes home and trains,” Erwin said. “You can’t outwork him. Once he gets the little things straight, he will be a force to be reckoned with for the next two years.”
