Perchmaster Classic trophy made of beer cans
It started out as a challenge for some weekend fishermen.
A group of Hahnville students having fun on the bayou decided to have their own fishing tournament. They called it the Perchmaster Classic.
Most had visited the Bassmaster Classic expos, weigh-ins and seminars. They decided to catch perch in the Des Allemands area and they took it seriously by adopting safety rules, times of departure, teams, weigh-in times and awards.
All competitors had to have completed the Louisiana Boaters Safety course, wear a life jacket whenever the boat was running, have fire extinguishers, operating kill switches and running lights before leaving the dock. Boats would depart at 6 a.m. and return at 2 p.m. for weigh-in.
Each boat had two fishermen per team.
The teams consisted of Jared Bosco and Matt Porch, Brody Bourg and Alex Dufrene and Jake Noel and Hunter McDonald. The locations they fished included Humble in the Lake, the Providence Canal, Penrod, Humble in the Bayou, the Airplane, Four Corners and the Mecom Canal.
The best baits of the day were earthworms under a cork and black/chartreuse tube jigs under a cork.
“The wind was very strong today, so we tried to stay in Des Allemands.” Bourg said.
In the final standings, Bosco and Porch placed third and Bourg and Dufrene placed second and had the Big Fish award. First place honors went to Noel and McDonald who caught 40 bream, google-eye and chinquapin.
The homemade trophy was a piece of art.
“I took some old beer cans, a 2×4, and some fish toys to make the trophy,” Noel said. “I also used some duct tape for the label. This was fun.”
Porch agreed.
“I’ll be ready next year. We did not do any scouting and just went out and fished.” he said.
