With torrential rains hitting Houma in the hour before Hahnville took the field against Terrebonne the turf quickly turned into mud, but that did not stop Hahnville’s running backs from turning in an outstanding performance.
Tailbacks Lynn Simmons and Todge Scott both rushed for over 100 yards and a touchdown apiece in 22-7 win over Terrebonne.
Although Hahnville’s one two punch backfield was in top gear for most of the night, the team was greatly helped by missteps on behalf of Terrebonne.
The first score of the game came off one such Terrebonne mishap when their tailback fumbled and while scrambling to pick it up Hahnville’s defense batted the ball down the field 34 yards into the end zone before where they recovered it for a touchdown. A point after attempt by Craig Ford put Hahnville up 7-0 in the first quarter. On that play one of Terrebonne’s players would be ejected in the first of many personal foul calls that plagued the team throughout the night.
Terrebonne came back with 32-yard rush on the next series, but were unable to convert and ended the first quarter with a dropped long snap that allowed Hahnville linebacker Timothy Roberts enough time to tackle the punter before he could get the ball off.
Taking over on the 34-yard line Hahnville would fumble the ball on the next play, but Scott scooped it up behind the line and busted through for a 32-yard touchdown. Simmons barreled up the middle for a two-point conversion to make the score 15-0.
Terrebonne’s offense saw some success on their next drive with two nice runs for a first down and a 28-yard pass completion, but Hahnville’s defense held again. Hahnville took over at midfield after Terrebonne’s punter made another misstep and slipped and fell in the mud when he went to kick the ball.
Two plays later Simmons took an off tackle handoff and broke a few tackles on his way to a 53-yard rushing touchdown. Ford’s extra point put Hahnville on top 22-0.
Terrebonne would put together a decent drive at the end of the first half, but were stopped around the Hahnville’s 30-yard line when tacklers swarmed the ball carrier for a loss on fourth and one.
The rain picked back up for nearly the entirety of the second half and both teams struggled with turnovers.
Hahnville defensive lineman Ricky Davis picked off a Terrebonne pass, which was their second of the game after Larry Boyd picked one off in the first half.
Hahnville had one more chance to score after the Davis interception when Scott took the ball into Terrebonne territory on long rush. Scott followed it up with a halfback pass, one of two Hahnville pass attempts on the night, that slipped through the fingers of wide receiver Brandon Singleton at the goal line.
On the next series Terrebonne embarked on a long drive composed of numerous rushes including a 28-yard gain to the one-yard line that set up a one-yard rushing touchdown and their only score of the night to make it 22-7.
Hahnville hung on throughout the fourth quarter and ran the clock down for the win to improve to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in district play.
Hahnville next takes on East St. John at home on Friday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m.
