Though Hahnville did not qualify for the girls’ basketball playoffs, the Lady Tigers finished the season on a high note, besting Central Lafourche in front of HHS’ home fans 39-28 Friday night.
Hahnville’s Yasah Gale, Ru’yana Bossier and Makaila Carter each scored 10 to lead the Lady Tigers’ to victory.
Carter, a sophomore, was key in the second half as she was able to exploit some favorable matchups against the Tarpons’ man-to-man defense.
“We isolated Makaila,” said Hahnville coach Phil Bychurch. “She had the ball in her hands and she was able to take it to the hole. In the second half, we did a decent job getting to the rim and making our free throws in second half. Sometimes, you win something of an ugly game, but we end on a win and it’s something we can build on, hopefully, for next year.”
Carter said it felt good for the Tigers (16-15, 6-6) to go out on a win.
“The whole season, we’ve wanted to attack and we were able to tonight,” Carter said. “We just tried to get steals and push it to get the break started.”
Bychurch said his team came out with renewed effort in the second half after what he felt was a somewhat lackadaisical opening two quarters against Central Lafourche (1-28).
“We only had two fouls in the first half, a sign we weren’t being aggressive,” Bychurch said. “We needed to get after it, and I told my girls we needed to come out and push.”
The Tigers needed to win their final three games to have a chance at reaching the postseason, but a 47-42 home loss to Terrebonne (10-17) Feb. 5 all but ended those hopes.
Bossier scored 12 to lead Hahnville. Carter and Raegan Crawford each added 11.
In a 64-35 loss at East St. John (18-8) Feb. 8, Crawford scored 16 to lead HHS.
Hahnville finished fourth in District 7-5A play.
Hahnville has increased its win total in each season since Bychurch’s first, winning nine games in his initial campaign, then 11 before this season’s 16 win effort. Most of the roster will return next season, as the Tigers lose just three seniors, with juniors-to-be Gale and Carter leading the charge among returning players.
”Hopefully we’ll get some young help from our middle and feeder schools,” Bychurch said. “We had good leadership from our seniors this season, so we’re looking for someone to step it up into that role next year.”
