Hahnville suffers tough loss in triple overtime

The Hahnville Tigers left everything they had out on the field, but it was not enough to overcome the Rummel Raiders in a triple overtime loss.

The Tigers (1-1) were the underdog to Rummel (2-0), ranked No. 15 in the nation by USA Today, entering week two of the high school football season, but after holding their own with last year’s Division 1 state championship winners Hahnville has to come away with a little more respect from the rest of 5A football for their performance.

The game was a battle from the beginning with Rummel rolling down the field on their first series that ended with a 32-yard touchdown pass by senior quarterback Chase Fourcade.

But every time Rummel put points on the board Hahnville was came right back. Although Hahnville went three and out on their first drive of the night they took advantage of a Rummel fumble and a long rush by junior A back Devonte Cravin on their second possession to put freshman kicker Matthew Boyer in place for 23-yard field goal for their first points of the night. The Tigers followed that up with a 16-yard rushing touchdown by senior A back Rickey Preston and a 70-yard punt return by senior wide receiver Brandon Singleton. Special teams struck again in the last few minutes of the second quarter with a blocked field goal to take the game to half 17-10.

Despite a commanding performance for much of the game on defense led by the play of junior linebacker Peyton Robert and a stingy rush defense, costly mistakes on offense, including several fumbles, kept Rummel in good field position throughout the third quarter.

Fourcade was able to mount back-to-back scoring drives with a 27-yard passing touchdown to tailback/safety Brandon Phillips, who was dynamic on both offense and defense, and an eight-yard rushing himself touchdown to take the lead 24-17.

Hahnville struck back in the form of junior B back Drew Dunn who busted a 21-yard run up the gut and finished up the drive with four rushes in five plays and a two-yard touchdown to tie the score 24-24.

The Tigers were able to force a three-and-out on the Raiders next drive. Two long screen passes from junior quarterback Mike Neal to Singleton took the Tigers offense them into Raiders territory and ran the clock down to only 40 seconds left before Boyer missed on a long field goal. Rummel finished ran out regulation time by kneeling the ball.

In overtime neither team scored on their first series, but a 10-yard touchdown strike from Neal to Singleton put the Tigers up 31-24.

While the Tigers defense was able to stop Rummel short of the goal line in three plays, on fourth down and two yards to go Phillips snuck into the end zone to tie up the score. Hanville was unsuccessful on their next try on offense and the Raiders went back to Phillips again who put the game away 37-31 with another rushing touchdown.

Hahnville next travels to Behrman Stadium to take on Landry-Walker on Friday at 7 p.m.
