Hahnville struggles in loss to John Ehret

A week after dominating West Jefferson 45-0, Hahnville absorbed what coach Mike Silva called a “wake-up call” at home against John Ehret.

Ehret quarterback Travis Mumphrey threw three touchdown passes, which was more than enough for a Patriots defense that pitched a shutout in a 26-0 victory at Tiger Stadium.

It’s the way we were manhandled up front on both sides of the ball, that was the worst part,” Silva said. “We talked about handling their onslaught early on, the way they come off the bus … they were a lot more ready to play than we were. They jumped on us early and we could never really get our footing.”

Ehret capped two first quarter drives with touchdowns, both on Mumphrey passes to Jordan Pickney (20 yards) and Brandon Jones (14 yards) to go ahead 12-0. Mumphrey tossed a pretty over-the-shoulder ball to Michael Jones in the second quarter for another touchdown, this one from 17 yards to make it 18-0.

“He’s a good quarterback,” Silva said of Mumphrey. “People don’t give him enough credit … I don’t know why more local schools aren’t recruiting him. He was very accurate tonight. When we tried to bring pressure on him, he always found the open man or found a mismatch.”

That was where the score remained until the fourth quarter, when Damond Leonard got loose for a 35-yard touchdown run.

Hahnville struggled to move the ball in the first half, but had a few chances to get back in the game on second half drives deep into Ehret territory, but on both occasions the Tigers turned the ball over on downs. The Tigers ended the night with just over 160 yards of offense, led by Jace Myers’ 45 yards rushing.

Jha’Quan Jackson started at quarterback before eventually giving way to sophomore Andrew Naquin and moving out to wide receiver. Jackson led Hahnville in receiving with 40 yards on two catches.

Silva, who is serving as Hahnville’s interim head coach as head coach Nick Saltaformaggio serves a four-game suspension, said after the glow of last week’s dominant victory, this game serves as an “attitude adjustment.”

“We thought we looked good when we beat West Jefferson and I think this was an eye-opener for us,” said Silva. “We’ve taken some hits. We’ve lost a quarterback (Andrew Robison, who was ruled ineligible by the LHSAA) and a running back (Darryle Evans, who is sidelined with an injury). Maybe this is a shock to our system and maybe we need that.

“But anything that happens to us now is our own doing, no matter who is playing or who is out. We’ll make changes is we have to make changes and just get our guys to play better. We’re not making any trades or bringing in any free agents, so we’ve gotta make our guys better and go from there.”
