Tigers defeat Westgate 71-70
The Hahnville High School boys basketball team is one step closer to the 5A championship game after they nicked Westgate 71-70 in the regional round of the playoffs. Coach Brian Lumar says that the Tigers game was near perfection.
“Both teams played hard and strong,” he said. “And Hahnville played completely together as a team.”
Lumar also says that there are no negative aspects to overshadow the team’s win.
“It was a true dog fight until the end,” he added. “We just need to limit our turnovers.”
The Tigers will host East Ascension in the quarterfinals on March 6 at Hahnville.
And Lumar says that his team knows what to expect.
“We know each other as teams,” he said. “We know what to expect and we know how to approach this game. We’re going to practice hard the nest two days and step up the intensity.”
The Louisiana High School Athletic Association will hold the State Farm Top 28 Basketball Tournament at the Cajun Dome in Lafayette March 9 through 14.
Last week the Tigers’ outstanding defensive play helped them overcome a terrible night of shooting on Friday, Feb. 27 to help fend off a resilient Airline team 62-58 in a Class 5A bi-district playoff game at Hahnville.
Hahnville never trailed after the first 1:10 of the game, but the Tigers never did put Airline away, either. Hahnville went 6-of-19 at the free-throw line in the fourth quarter, helping to keep the Vikings in the game.
Airline, meanwhile, was 11-of-15 at the line, including a pair by Rodney Hill that cut Hahnville’s lead to 60-58 with 12 seconds remaining. But a defensive rebound by Derek Raymond, and a foul by Airline’s Josh Hagins with nine seconds remaining allowed Hahnville hold on for the win.
