Coming off of their biggest win of the season at H.L. Bourgeois last Friday, the Hahnville Tigers football team will head out on the road again to battle Central Lafourche this week.
Hahnville (4-4, 3-2) stormed out to a 28-0 lead in the first half against H.L. Bourgeois (0-8, 0-5) and finished out the game with a 48-6 victory in which the Tigers never punted.
With injuries in the backfield, sophomore running back Devonte’ Cravin got his first start and racked up 110 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. Senior running back Lynn Simmons also scored two rushing touchdowns for the Tigers.
Senior quarterback Dylan Keller returned to the starting lineup for the first time since injuring his shoulder in the second week of the season against Archbishop Rummel.
Keller got off to a good start, rushing for 37 yards on the second play from scrimmage, but fell on his shoulder in the second quarter and came out of the game.
Senior quarterback Logan Martindale, who has been starting in Keller’s absence, came in and threw two touchdown passes, including a 46-yard bomb to senior wide receiver Brandon Singleton.
Against Central Lafourche, Valdin believes Keller will get the start, but it may be a game time decision.
“We are hoping he will play. That will depend on how he does this week in practice. He didn’t reinjure his shoulder, he just fell on it. It will basically depend on how much pain he has,” Valdin said.
Cravin is also expected to see more playing time with senior running back Todge Scott out for another week nursing a sprained ankle.
Despite Martindale’s success in the passing game last week, Valdin said Hahnville will focus on the rushing game against Central.
“We’ll probably just try to run the ball. That is what we do. The ideal situation would be Dylan Keller would start and we run the football,” he said.
Valdin expects Central Lafourche to run a lot of blitzes and line up in a 3-3 stack defense similar to that played by Rummel. Earlier this season, Rummel kept Hahnville’s offense from scoring a touchdown.
On offense, Valdin said Central Lafourche has a few good players that the Tigers will have to contend with.
“They’ve got two running backs that are pretty good. That is probably their two best players and then they put them out as wide receivers and try to get mismatches,” he said.
In order for Hahnville to have success, Valdin said they have to stick to the basics and not make mistakes.
“We have to stop the run and defensively we have to line up correctly. Offensively we have to be able to run the football. I think we will be able to do that, but they have better players and are a little more sound with what they do on defense than H.L. Bourgeois,” he said.
The Hahnville Tigers will take on the Central Lafourche Trojans at Central Lafourche on Friday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m.
