Hahnville falls to Helen Cox

Hahnville went toe-to-toe with one of the best teams in the New Orleans area on Friday but couldn’t hold on down the stretch as Helen Cox hit a three-pointer in the final seconds to beat the Tigers 53-50.

Hahnville (7-7, 0-1) was led in scoring by Shaquille Benson and Jamal Smith, who both finished with 14 points. Juwan Green added nine.

Despite the loss, Hahnville head coach Jerry Hernandez felt it was one of his team’s best performances of the season. He said the loss came down to two things.

“One, we took some ill-advised shots during the game and second, their best player hit a 29-foot shot with 3 seconds left,” he said.

This was Hahnville’s second loss to Helen Cox this season. Last month, the teams combined for 163 points with Helen Cox coming out on top by a score of 89-74.

While Hernandez says the Tigers are getting better at playing zone defense, the team does have a few things to work on before they get into the heart of district play.

“We need to see better shot selection and try not to force things into happening,” he said. “We need to be more patient on offense and execute our options better.”

Though Hahnville played one of their better games of the season against Helen Cox, they played one of their worst in a 67-36 loss to Thibodaux on Tuesday night.

However, Hahnville will get a chance to even their district record when they host Destrehan on Friday, Jan. 10. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:15 p.m.
