Hahnville falls in American Legion baseball playoffs

Hahnville's Joey Saucier

Hahnville-based Otto Candies got off to a hot start at the American Legion Second District East playoffs, but ultimately couldn’t sustain it, falling just short of qualifying for the American Legion State Tournament with an elimination loss to Rummel-based Deanie’s Seafood Saturday.

It wasn’t Hahnville’s day as both teams attempted to stave off elimination. Deanie’s pitching silenced their bats by posting a three-hitter and notching a 4-0 victory that spelled the end of Otto Candies’ Legion run.

Deanie’s took 2-0 lead in the fourth inning and tacked on runs in the fifth and seventh to hand Otto Candies its second loss of the double-elimination tournament.

Joey Saucier went 2-for-3 in the game to lead Otto Candies offensively, but Deanie’s pitching allowed just three total hits in the game.

Otto Candies started  its tourney fare with a decisive win over Chalmette-based Gulf Coast Bank, scoring at least one run in six of its seven innings at bat to earn a 13-3 victory.

Dustin Ford earned the win, going 3.2 innings with two strikeouts and no hits or runs allowed.

Otto Candies’ 13 runs came on 14 hits, led by a trio of batters who collected three hits each. Hayden Theriot went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs. Dustin Ford was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored and David Bernard was 3-for-5 with a run scored. Ethan Chacon chipped in two hits and scored twice. Max Farrell, Chacon, Ford and Theriot each doubled in the game.

Shaw-based Refuel scored four runs in the sixth inning to slam the door on an 8-1 win that gave Otto Candies its first loss of the tourney.

Jack Stumbo took the loss on the mound, as he and David Bernard each pitched three innings and allowed four runs on five hits.
