Former DHS star Johnson piling up accolades

Former Destrehan High School star football player Damaris Johnson is piling up the postseason honors for his play in 2010 at the University of Tulsa.

The 5-8, 170-pound punt/kickoff return man earned 1st team All-Conference USA honors as a punt return specialist and  was also named the Conference USA Special Teams Player of the Year for 2010.

Johnson became the FBS and Conference USA record holder for career kickoff return yards in his junior season. In only three years, he has racked up 3,308 career kickoff return yards.

In 2010 Johnson averaged 12.5 yards per return on 22 punts and he brought one back for a touchdown. He also returned 29 kickoffs, averaged 27.4 yards per runback and returned one back for a touchdown in 2010.

For the second straight season Johnson leads the nation in all-purpose yards with a 191.8-yard per game average. In 2010 the speedy playmaker recorded five 200-yard plus games and 39 plays for 20 yards or more.

Johnson ranks 24th nationally for kickoff return yards and 19th nationally for punt return yardage in 2010 and most times teams were kicking away from him.

The former Wildcat standout also earned 2nd team All-Conference USA honors as a wide receiver. He led his team in receptions with 53 for 77 yards and three touchdowns and he was second on the team in rushing with 462 yards on 50 carries and six touchdowns.

Johnson was a semifinalist for the Paul Hornung Award given to the most versatile football player in the country.

St. Charles Parish stars will lead Ravens against Saints

This coming Sunday the New Orleans Saints (10-3) will play the Baltimore Ravens, who are led on defense by former Destrehan High School free safety Ed Reed and former Hahnville High School strong safety Dawan Landry.

The Saints reached the double-digit win mark for the third time in the five year tenure of Sean Payton in New Orleans with a 31-13 win over the St. Louis Rams. However, the Saints still trail the Atlanta Falcons (11-2)  in the NFC South Division.

Saints quarterback Drew Brees has led his team to victories against every NFL team other than the Baltimore Ravens and the Chicago Bears during his NFL career.

The explosive Saints offense has outscored their opponents 95-23 in the first quarter of play this season, but what is more impressive is that defensively they have given up a league-low eight touchdown passes in a pass-oriented league.

The Saints secondary has also intercepted nine passes in 2010.
