There’s a longtime tradition of great football at Hahnville High School and Tiger alums who have gone on to have incredible success on the college and pro gridiron.
That, perhaps, then makes the school quite the fitting host in February when the NFL comes to town.
Hahnville High School has been selected to host the NFL’s 2025 Play Football Family Festival on Feb. 8, one day before Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans.
The objective of the event is to highlight youth and high school tackle and flag football participants and coaches, high school football programs, and football partners. Admission is free.
School system personnel representing athletics and public information met with representatives from the NFL, the New Orleans Saints, and e2k Events on Sept. 19 to discuss hosting the event as both Destrehan and Hahnville high schools were recommended by the Saints organization to the NFL as possible sites for the event. On Oct. 4, Hahnville Head Football Coach Greg Boyne received confirmation that the school was selected for the event.
Activities planned for the festival include autograph stations with current NFL players and legends, on-field skills and drills, photo ops, cheerleaders and mascots for the Super Bowl teams, DJ, food trucks, obstacle courses and a parents forum.
The National Football League has hosted the event since 2017.
“This is an event we’ve done for the last seven years, and it’s one we really believe in,” said Roman Oben, former longtime NFL offensive tackle and the BFL’s Vice President of Football Development. “It’s a festival for the entire family, parents and kids alike … we’ve always received great support with this event and every year’s been better than the last.”
Oben, a former Super Bowl champion starter with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, said attendees will be able to ask questions with current and former players about their football experience. There will also be special giveaways.
“You look at the usual cost of an event for a family of four – this is free and you’ll walk away better than you arrived,” Oben said.
Everything at the event is football focused, where local youth can meet current NFL players and legends, walk the field and experience football in a way they never have before.
He said HHS was selected for the event for several reasons. The NFL works with the New Orleans Saints organization to compile potential host sites, with space, parking and a community known for strong support as factors to consider.
The tradition of NFL players with roots in St. Charles Parish was another attractive point, Oben said.
“This area has a lot of significance in that regard,” Oben said. “There are a lot of reasons that went into choosing (Hahnville), and that certainly went into it as well.”
The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
