Hahnville High School defensive backs Tyren Hills and Johnell Celistan have announced verbal commitments to their respective schools.
Hills, a 6’1, 185-pound defensive back who has been clocked in the 40-yard dash in 4.51 seconds, committed to the University of Minnesota after being pursued by North Texas, Louisiana Tech, UL-Monroe and Memphis.
“I have a strong relationship with Coach Jay Sawvel,” Hills said. “He not only recruited me, but he will also be my position coach. He has kept me up to date with everything going on there. Minnesota is recruiting me to play safety. I love the chance to come down in the box and tackle people.
“My experience here at Hahnville in the coverage part of the game will help me get on the field quicker. I am going to be visiting there in December and I can’t wait to experience the campus in person.”
Celistan, a 6’2, 175-pound cornerback, committed to Tulsa after being actively pursued by Vanderbilt, Memphis, North Texas and Minnesota.
The speedy cornerback who has been timed in the 40-yard dash in 4.44 seconds, attended the Hurricane’s game last week against Houston and fell in love with the school.
“I loved each and every bit of the campus,” Celistan said. “I feel I made the right decision. I have liked Tulsa since I first started being recruited by the Hurricanes. I just had to figure out what all the schools had to offer from a playing standpoint and academically.
“It was just a process of elimination. The campus at Tulsa is awesome. The coaches presented themselves in a very professional manner and you can see that they are interested in the total development of the player on and off the field.”
The speedy defensive back will love the opportunity to play cornerback at Tulsa.
“I feel my real strength at the cornerback position is my foot speed, my agility to turn and run with receivers and the quickness to keep up with those speedy receivers on the deeper patterns,” he said.
Celistan and Hills join fellow defensive back Jerqwinick Sandolph in extending their football careers beyond Hahnville. Sandolph, who projects at the safety spot in college, verbally committed to LSU in the summer.
