District race tight after Tigers hand ‘Cats first 7-5A loss

The District 7-5A championship will come down to the wire. While Destrehan maintains a one-game lead over Hahnville in the District 7-5A championship race, it will not come away with a season sweep.

Hahnville avenged their home loss to their archrival from earlier this season behind a shutout performance by pitcher Austin Perrin, the Tigers a 2-0 victor over Destrehan last Thursday.

It was the first district loss of the season for Destrehan.

With four games left in 7-5A play for Hahnville (19-8, 5-2) and three for Destrehan (19-6, 7-1), the Tigers would need a little help to run down the Wildcats. Central Lafourche (13-9, 5-2) remains in the district championship mix as well, in a tie for second place with Hahnville.

Destrehan was able to get to Perrin in the first game, a 6-3 DHS win on March 22. But the lefty dominated the rematch. He went the complete seven innings to notch a four-hit shutout, striking out six and walking none.

“Austin was lights out,” Hahnville coach David Baudry said. “He was highly motivated after what happened last time out, when he felt he didn’t pitch his best. He had his best stuff and kept them off balance throughout the course of the game.”

Hahnville leadoff batter Hunter LeBlanc went 3-for-4 at the plate, including a double, while Pat Phelan went 2-for-3.

Destrehan’s Cole Martin took the loss, going the complete game and allowing two earned runs on six hits and four walks. He struck out six. Dane Simon led the Wildcats at the plate, going 2-for-3.

Hahnville scored both of their runs in the fourth inning. After Bryce Hargis’ leadoff walk led to him scoring on a groundball hit by Josh Nunez, Pat Phelan followed up his own single by scoring from third on a wild pitch. Destrehan got a runner on with one out or less in each of the final two innings, but Perrin and Hahnville slammed the door.

“You could never feel too, too comfortable, because Destrehan’s got a smaller park and they’ve got the ability to hit it out and change things in a hurry,” Baudry said. “But Austin had a great day and our guys played great defense behind him, so we didn’t give them many chances.”

Destrehan, meanwhile, is attempting to regroup after the Hahnville loss and another tough defeat at the hands of E.D. White.

“The intensity isn’t where it needs to be at this point in the season,” Destrehan coach Chris Mire said. “Hahnville’s always good, especially with Perrin on the mound, and they were better (on that day). It was a very disappointing week, given we talked about how important it would be for us with E.D. White and Hahnville.”

HAHNVILLE 2, SULPHUR 1 — The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the 10th inning at Sulphur after Braxton Dufrene’s bases loaded walk forced home a run, but Sulphur (13-9)responded on Chance Stone’s two-RBI single to capture a 2-1 non-district victory.

The game displayed a true pitching duel between Hahnville starter Bryce Hargis and Sulphur starter Andrew Sheridan. There were just total hits in the game. Hargis tossed eight one-hit innings, striking out eight and walked two.  Sheridan allowed two hits while walking five and striking out five.

Waylon LeBlanc recorded two of Hahnville’s three hits in the game.

Baudry said that going forward, the focus will be on improving offensive production. In four of past five games entering this week, it scored two runs or less, including a 3-2 loss at home to H.L. Bourgeois and a 2-0 win at Central Lafourche.

“We’ve got to get better in that area,” Baudry said. “You look at the games against Destrehan and Sulphur, and within (48) hours our starting pitchers give up no runs in 15 innings … but we only score two, and both came against Destrehan, so we split. So right now, we’re putting a lot of attention on that.”

Hahnville will travel to face East St. John today. Saturday, it hosts Central Lafourche. Both are district contests.

DESTREHAN 10, TERREBONNE 3 — DHS bounced back from the Hahnville loss to beat Terrebonne (8-16, 1-7) at Destrehan, maintaining the Wildcats’ one game lead in District 7-5A.

Evan Keller went 2-for-3 and scored three runs for Destrehan. Cole Martin and Brandon Robicheaux each drove in three runs, Robichaux going 2-for-3. Andrew Morrow went 2-for-2 with an RBI.

Four DHS pitchers combined to allow three earned runs on five hits, with starter Landon Marceaux earning the win. He struck out seven in four innings, allowing two hits and no runs.

E.D. WHITE 8, DESTREHAN 7 — The sacrifice fly of E.D. White’s Trey St. Pierre scored Collin Desandro for a walk off RBI as the Cardinals rallied from six runs down to score a non-district home victory over the Wildcats last week.

“We made a couple of errors in the last  couple innings that led to us taking out our starter, and the bullpen didn’t get it done this time out,” Mire said. E.D. White did a better job playing for the full 21 outs.”

Dane Simon went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Destrehan. Evan Keller went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

DHS scored four runs in the top of the first inning and then three more in the sixth to take a 7-1 lead. E.D. White (21-3) scored four in the sixth and two more in the seventh to tie things up.

DHS has five games remaining, beginning with a matchup at Central Lafourche today. The Wildcats host H.L. Bourgeois Saturday and travel to Thibodaux Monday. Non-district games against Lutcher and Parkview Baptist are also on the slate.
