Congratulations to Destrehan High School senior Stephen Tumblin who was chosen as a member of the 2008 U.S. Army All-American Marching Band.
“It feels great! It is always nice for your talents to be recognized, and on this grand a scale is incredible,” said Tumblin.
Tumblin is the son of Joyce Joseph and a resident of Destrehan.
He has been a member of the DHS band program for four years of his high school career and currently serves as the percussion sergeant.
Tumblin has received numerous awards and recognition, including Louisiana All-State Band for three years and District VII Honor Band for three years as a first chair in percussion. He will probably acquire those accolades again this year.
In addition to his dedication to the DHS band program, Tumblin is also active in his community.
He plays the drums for the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in St. Rose, and he teaches percussion to middle school students at Hurst and Schoeffner.
In his future, Tumblin would like to attend the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and major in music education. He would eventually like to become a college professor and band director.
Tumblin competed against thousands of American high school students in the audition process to become selected as a member of the All-American band.
DHS band director Byron Toups never doubted Tumblin would be selected. “Stephen is one of the best students I have ever taught. He is a wonderful person and a true role model, and is most deserving of this recognition,” Toups said.
As humbly as ever, Tumblin offered wisdom to his fellow students:
“With this honor, I learned a valuable lesson: Don’t underestimate yourself and your abilities. You really can achieve goals and greatness in areas you are talented in. You just have to be dedicated and strive for that greatness. Remain faithful to your goals.”
