DHS Ladycats net first-place district spot

On Oct. 15, the Destrehan High School Ladycats varsity volleyball team out served parish rivals, the Hahnville High School Lady Tigers to net a victory at the teams’ second meeting of the season.With 11 kills, DHS junior Alexis Keller helped her team take home the victory.

“Alexis is an excellent defensive player,” said coach Denise Keller. “She normally is positioned as an outside hitter and this is her first year as a setter.”

Denise says that another star player that shines among the pack and aids in helping her team score is DHS senior and middle blocker Daisha Smith.

“Daisha had 15 kills and has come along way this year as a volleyball player,” said Denise. “She’s 6’ 4” and provides some of the team’s hardest hits.”

With an 8-15 overall record and tied for first place in district with St. Amant at 4-1, Denise points out that it’s the Ladycats’ talent and ability to learn from their mistakes that has taken them so close to the top in their division.

“Having the right line up on the court and having the ability to come back from a loss and win big is what really strengthens our team,” said Denise. “Our confidence is continuously growing and we’re pulling it all together by keeping up the momentum and correcting errors.”

DHS defeated HHS by winning 3 out of 5 sets 25-21, 27-25, 25-27, 25-22.

The Ladycats matched against St. Amant on Oct. 20 and took the lead in their division.

DHS defeated their toughest competitor, St. Amant, on Oct. 20 gaining first place in their district.

Freshman Robin Sill had 13 kills, setter Alexis Keller had 20 assists and 10 aces, and senior Teena Marchese ended the game with 39 digs.
