DHS cornerback signs with Nicholls

New coach targets St. Charles Parish

It took a few weeks after National Signing Day to occur, but Destrehan High School cornerback Josh Dewey will continuing his football career at Nicholls State University.

The three-year letterman at Destrehan had 55 tackles, one forced fumble, broke up 12 passes and had one pass interception as a senior. The cover-corner earned 1st team All-District honors and he was selected to play in the Bayou vs. River Region All-Star game.

Dewey’s decision to play in that game was critical in his recruitment by Nicholls State head coach Charlie Stubbs.

‘”This was my first time to witness the all-star game in person and while I was familiar with some of the players in that contest there were two guys that I wanted to know more about after that game,” Stubbs said. “The first was West St. John offensive lineman Cailin Cola, who we ended up signing here at Nicholls and the other was Josh Dewey.

“He impressed me with his speed, his coverage skills and his ability to read and react quickly to the ball in flight. In the Southland Conference we see a lot of three and four wide receiver sets and so anytime we can get someone who we feel can help us match-up coverage wise we are quick to respond.”

Stubbs said that Dewey visited Nicholls twice, once on an official visit and another time on an unofficial visit.

“We are excited to have him as part of the Nicholls family,” Stubbs said. “It is important to keep our recruiting philosophy of signing in-state student-athletes in order to help build this program to a championship level.”

Dewey was also a member of the Wildcat track team where he won district three times and reached the state finals twice.

The speedy defensive back joins former Destrehan High School linebacker Warren Lennix Jr., who was a freshman with the Colonels last season.

With the addition of Dewey the Colonels have landed three other players with ties to the River Parish Region in 2011 including Hahnville linebacker Ben Taylor, Hahnville defensive tackle Jordan Thompson and Riverside Academy quarterback/athlete Darnall Rachal.

“When I arrived last January I really didn’t know that much about the area, but I knew Louisiana produced a lot of terrific football players,” Stubbs said. “Everyone I spoke to told me about the talent and coaching in the St. Charles Parish area and they were right on target about that. We have spent a lot of time watching and evaluating players from the St. Charles area and we will continue to put an emphasis on making Nicholls State a strong option for them when they select a school for sports and academics.

“I want to continue to form good relations with the coaches and players in that area and every other spot in Louisiana, but I have to admit the football talent level there is quite impressive.”

Finally, a Nicholls State head football coach that gets it.
