After three-straight district victories, Wildcats fall, 11-10, to East Ascension
Destrehan came out on the losing end of a wild game with East Ascension on Tuesday, falling 11-10 in ten innings.
The two teams combined for 21 runs, 28 hits, 16 walks and 12 strikeouts in the contest. Destrehan was in front for half of the game, taking a 6-1 lead into the fifth inning.
East Ascension scored five runs in the fifth to tie up the game at 6-6, but Destrehan scored in the bottom of the frame to take back the lead.
After the seventh, the teams were locked at a 9-9 score, and both squads scored a run in the eighth to tie the game at 10-10.
East Ascension finally put the game away in the 10th by bringing a single run across the plate for the victory.
Brennan Quigley led the Wildcats from the plate, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs and a home run. Jacob Marino went 3-for-5.
The Wildcats are now 7-5 in district play.
Before the loss, the Wildcats had been riding a three-game win streak after a district sweep of East St. John.
In the first game of their doubleheader against East St. John last Thursday, Destrehan jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning on their way to a 6-2 victory.
Blake Hymel earned a two-out walk, and was brought home when Edwin DeLaCruz smacked a double to right field. Cameron Quigley then singled to score DeLaCruz and give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead.
East St. John would battle back in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game, but the Wildcats put them away in the final frame.
Jesse Bryant reached on a one-out error in the top of the seventh to start the rally, but was thrown out at third on a fielder’s choice by Jace Weber.
With two outs, Zach Schexnaydre stepped to the plate and blasted a two-run home run over the center field wall, giving Destrehan a 4-2 lead.
Ryan Burks then drew a walk and Brandt Bourgeois singled to short to score Burks. The Wildcats got one more run on a Hymel single to center that scored Jarius Vinnett.
Schexnaydre led the Wildcats from the plate, finishing with two RBIs on one hit, while Bourgeois, Hymel, DeLaCruz and Quigley also drove in runs on their only hits.
Bourgeois also picked up the win, striking out six and allowing no hits in the final two innings of the game.
After creeping past East St. John on Thursday, the Wildcats picked up a huge 13-2 win in the second game of the doubleheader.
East St. John actually struck first, scoring a run in the bottom of the second, but the Wildcats tied the score on a fielder’s choice by Quigley in the bottom of the inning.
East St. John went back on top in the third 2-1, but once Destrehan began to distance themselves from the competition in the bottom of the frame.
Burks homered to center to start the inning and DeLaCruz added a two-run shot an out later to give the Wildcats a 4-2 lead.
Destrehan added two more runs in the fourth on a fielder’s choice by Schexnaydre and a sacrifice fly by Burks, and put the game away in the fifth by scoring seven runs.
Quigley brought in one of those runs on a single to left, while Bryant scored two on a single to right.
A Weber double put the Wildcats on top 10-2, and Schexnaydre put the game away a batter later by blasting a three-run shot to left field for the final 13-2 margin.
Schexnaydre finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs, while Bryant went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Burks also recorded two RBIs on only one hit.
DeLaCruz picked up the win, striking out four and giving up six hits and two runs in five innings of work.
The Wildcats will travel to East Ascension on Thursday for a 4 p.m. game before hitting the road to battle St. Amant on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
Destrehan wraps up the regular season when they host St. Amant on April 21 at 4 p.m.
