The Destrehan Wildcats soccer team gained the upper hand over rival Hahnville and remained undefeated in district play with a 2-0 victory over the Tigers last week.
Destrehan (11-1-1, 4-0) used a strong offensive performance in the second half to hand Hahnville their first district defeat of the year. The win also moved the Wildcats into pole position in District 8-1.
Destrehan took a season high seven shots on goal in the first half, but none of them found their mark. However, nine minutes into the second half junior Kyler LeGrange threaded a pass to fellow junior Jacob Johnson, who took a shot from 18 yards out. Hahnville was able to clear the ball, but it bounced into the awaiting feet of freshman Seth Danna. With two defenders on him, Danna blasted a shot into the goal to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.
Eleven minutes later, Destrehan scored again to ice the game.
With Hahnville’s entire defense across midfield, LaGrange once again got things started by lacing a beautiful through ball to Johnson. Johnson took off with a lone defender chasing him and was able to get off a nice shot that sailed into the back of the net to put the Wildcats up 2-0.
Along with the impressive performances on offense, Destrehan goalie Alex Diaz finished with a season high six saves in the game.
Destrehan will host Higgins on Friday, while Hahnville will travel to take on Bonnabel on Friday.
