Destrehan runs all over Terrebonne for win

Destrehan trailed 3-0 early against Terrebonne in the Wildcats’ homecoming game Friday night, but the Tigers’ advantage didn’t last long as the Wildcats romped to a 44-17 District 7-5A victory.Kristian Mosley’s three first-half touchdown runs — including two from 75 and 67 yards, respectively —helped spur Destrehan to a 34-10 halftime lead from which the Wildcats (5-0, 2-0) never looked back.

Mosley rushed for 250 yards on the night, while John Emery added 140 yards on the ground.

“We started getting the run game going early,” said Destrehan coach Stephen Robicheaux. “Obviously, our offensive line did a tremendous job blocking. When you have two backs combine for nearly 400 yards, that’s pretty special. We blocked really well at the first level, and when Kristian gets into the secondary, it’s hard for any one person to catch and tackle him.”

It was the first career start, and win, for sophomore passer J.R. Blood, who stepped in for senior starter Kohen Granier. Granier missed the game due to injury.

“J.R. is an extremely smart kid and we have all the confidence in the world in him,” Robicheaux said. “He’s a great athlete. He started for our basketball team as a freshman. We know we can win a lot of games with him.”

Destrehan made a few mistakes early, however. A fumble on the opening kickoff gave Terrebonne the ball deep in Destrehan territory. The Destrehan defense held, however, and the Tigers settled for a 3-0 lead after a made field goal.

Mosley put Destrehan ahead with 5:41 left in the first quarter on his 15-yard touchdown run. The Wildcats added to the lead on their next possession when Blood dialed up Quinton Torbor on a 60-yard deep pass for a touchdown.

Terrebonne (3-2, 0-2) cut the lead to 13-10 on a touchdown run early in the second quarter, but Destrehan answered on its next drive, one keyed by two big Emery runs. The second went for a 17-yard touchdown and made it a 20-10 lead.

Destrehan scored on each of its next two drives, both on long Mosley runs: the first a 75-yard jaunt and then a 67-yarder, making it a 34-10 halftime lead.

Blood and Justin Jefferson connected for a 53-yard touchdown early in the second half, while Bradley Quinn added a field goal to round out Destrehan’s scoring.

Robicheaux said his team made some uncharacteristic mistakes that need to be ironed out, but was pleased with the overall effort of his players.

“I thought to a certain point we played like we were coming off of a big win last week and dealing with homecoming this week,” Robicheaux said. “But our kids turned it around. We get to 5-0 with the win. You can’t really do better than that.”

The 17 points represented Terrebonne’s lowest scoring output of the season.

“Our defense played well. We left them in a lot of third-and-long situations,” Robicheaux said. “After the second half against Hahnville last week, we challenged the defense to be better. Our kids did a good job answering the call.”
