Destrehan (3-0) fell behind for the first time all season when the Griffins connected on a 39-yard field goal in the second quarter to take a 3-0 lead. On the ensuing drive, the Wildcats marched to midfield thanks to a 16-yard run by running back Will Matthews. The drive stalled at the Dutchtown 41, but Destrehan head coach Stephen Robicheaux called a fake punt on 4th and 1 and Matthews managed to get just enough to keep the drive alive.

Matthews picked up six yards on the next play and it seemed like Destrehan was finally getting into an offensive rhythm. However, Wildcat quarterback Marquise Darensbourg was picked off in the end zone to end the scoring threat.

Destrehan’s defense, which was flawless all game long, forced a three-and-out and the Wildcats got the ball back on their own 45 with under five minutes left to go until the half.

Darensbourg connected with John Williams for a 14-yard gain and Dutchtown was called for unsportsmanlike conduct, which moved the ball to the 19. Matthews rushed for 13 yards on the next play and scored on a 6-yard run to give the Wildcats a 6-3 lead with 1:12 left until the half.

Destrehan missed the extra point, but the defense shut down Dutchtown once again to keep the lead in tact at the break.

The third quarter got off to a rough start for the Wildcats. Dutchtown recovered a fumble at the Destrehan 9-yard line. Griffin running back Philip Bolding scored on the next play to give the Griffins a 10-6 lead.

But five minutes later, Destrehan retook the lead on a 72-yard touchdown run by Kirk Merritt that energized Wildcat Stadium. On Dutchtown’s next drive, cornerback Austin Dickerson came through with his second interception of the game and returned it to the Griffin 29-yard line as the third quarter came to a close.

To being the fourth, Destrehan drove the ball down to the Dutchtown 1-yard line and Matthews put the finishing touches on the drive with a short touchdown run that gave the Wildcats a 20-10 lead.

Destrehan will remain at home for the fourth-straight week when they host Terrebonne on Friday, Sept. 26. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
