LSU has found success mining talent from Destrehan High School. It has an eye on continuing that pipeline with its latest overture to a Wildcats star.
Linebacker Dylan Gibbs recently revealed via Twitter that he’s received an preferred walk-on offer from LSU, following a senior season that saw him lead one of the state’s elite defensive teams in tackles.
A preferred walk-on offer comes in a case where a school would like to add a player to its roster, but will not offer any financial assistance for at least the first year. Athletes can, however, earn a scholarship going into their second season with the school.

The Wildcats established themselves as one of Class 5A’s most intimidating defensive units, leading the charge for the program as it marched to the 5A final and 5A semifinal in each of the past two seasons. Gibbs was the captain of a very talented unit, and his numbers ranked alongside the state’s best linebackers. He posted 139 total tackles, 92 of those solo, 11 tackles for loss, five sacks, three forced fumbles, one interception, five quarterback hurries and two pass break-ups.
The 6’0, 220 pound Gibbs was named the Defensive MVP in District 7-5A.
“He’s the heart and soul,” said Destrehan head coach Marcus Scott. “He understands schematics, makes sure we’re lined up properly … all he does is make plays for us. He’s mentally tough, a strong kid and brings that big game experience.”
