For the second-straight game, the Destrehan Wildcats (4-4, 2-2) let a win slip through their fingers, likely ruining their playoff chances in the process.
With 4:03 left in the game, Bonnabel’s Daniel Valesquez connected on a 37-yard field goal to give the Bruins a 22-21 lead over Destrehan.
With the time ticking away, the Wildcats quickly moved the ball down the field and reached the Bruin’s 15-yard line after an eight-yard pass from Donovan Isom to Derrick McGee and a six-yard run by Will Mathews.
With just under two minutes left, Isom tried to connect with Michael Smith at the Bruin’s goal line, but the ball was batted away. Destrehan was then called for holding, which gave the Wildcats a 4th and 20 from the Bonnabel 30-yard line. Isom was chased from the pocket and threw the ball into the ground to avoid the sack, which gave the ball back to the Bruins.
Bonnabel ran the clock out and clinched their second district win of the season.
The Wildcats slept walked through most of the first half, but took 14-6 lead early in the second on a 12-yard pass from Isom to Michael Smith. Bonnabel answered a few minutes later when freshman quarterback Treyvon Pittman found Kyle Evans in the back of the endzone for an 11-yard score.
However, Bonnabel failed to connect on a two-point conversion and still trailed 14-12.
With less than four minutes remaining in the third, Destrehan seemed to put the Bruins away after a 47-yard run by Rickey Jefferson set up a 13-yard score by Mathews that put Destrehan on top 21-12.
However, a freak play changed the outcome of the game.
On the next series, Destrehan intercepted Pittman, but the ball was stripped and picked up by Bonnabel’s Evans.
Evans ran 52 yard for the score to bring the Bruins to within two points at 21-19.
Neither team managed to gain much ground until Valesquez’s winning field goal.
