Destrehan falls to Airline, Shreve in Monroe tourney

The Destrehan Wildcats went 0-2 in the Monroe Tournament last week, falling to Airline 13-0 before being defeated by Captain Shreve 12-5.

Destrehan (4-3) got off to a bad tourney start in the first game, as errors and misplayed balls allowed Airline to build a 12-0 lead in the first three innings. Airline added another run in the fifth for the victory.

Senior Ethan Hutson suffered the loss for the Wildcats after giving up nine runs on seven hits. Hutson walked four and struck out one.

The only time the Wildcats really threatened to score was in the first inning. Edwin DeLaCruz and Zachary Schexnaydre both recorded one-out singles and Brett Hebert was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

But when DeLaCruz tried to score on a passed ball, he was tagged out at the plate.

Jesse Bryant grounded out to end the inning.

Destrehan only had three hits in the ballgame. Cameron Quickly went 2-for-2 from the plate with a double. The Wildcats only other hits came from Schexnayxdre and DeLaCruz.

Things didn’t get any easier for Destrehan on Friday night when they took on Captain Shreve.

Though neither team was able to get on the board in the first two innings, Captain Shreve exploded for five runs to start the third.

Destrehan got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning after Quigley doubled to score Jace Weber.

In the top of the fifth Captain Shreve added three more runs to stretch the lead to 8-1, but Destrehan responded with two more runs in the bottom of the frame to cut into the lead.

With one out in the fifth, Weber doubled to right field. Schexnaydre then blasted a home run to center field to make the score 8-3.

In the sixth, both Captain Shreve and Destrehan added two more runs.

For Destrehan, Bryant was hit by a pitch to lead off the sixth and Quigley followed with his second double of the game. Ryan Burks singled to bring in one run and Quigley would score on an error.

While the Wildcats had cut the Captain Shreve lead to 10-5, that’s as close as they would get. Shreve added two more runs in the seventh to put the game away.

Schexnaydre led the Wildcats from the plate, going 4-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Quigley finished 3-for-3 with two doubles, while Weber went 3-for-4 with two hits and two runs.

Brandt Bourgeois suffered the loss, allowing eight runs on seven hits.

The Wildcats hit the road this week to battle Rummel on Thursday at 4 p.m. They then take part in a tournament in St. Amant where they will battle Shaw, Jesuit and Brother Martin.

Destrehan faces Shaw at 4 p.m. on Friday, Jesuit at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Brother Martin at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
