Destrehan explodes in 1st quarter, routs Central Lafourche

Destrehan's Jeremiah Murphy rushes the passer against Thibodaux Friday night.

A traditional power, Destrehan has posted many dominating victories over the years — but it would be difficult to find many in which the Wildcats looked more impressive than they did Friday night.

Destrehan scored a whopping 37 first quarter points and led 51-7 at halftime on the way to an eventual 51-21 district victory over Central Lafourche at Wildcat Stadium, keeping Destrehan unbeaten in league play and alone atop the District 7-5A standings.

After the teams traded scores to start the game, Destrehan took to the skies when J.R. Blood dialed up Joe Washington for a 68-yard touchdown pass to put Destrehan on top 14-7 at the 8:40 mark of the first quarter.

The Wildcats (6-1, 4-0) forced a turnover to end Central’s next possession, with Tyler Morton recovering a fumble to set DHS up at the Central 46-yard line. John Emery didn’t need a warm up, taking his first carry of the night straight up the sideline, 46 yards to pay dirt to push Destrehan ahead by two scores with 7:26 left in the first quarter.

Destrehan forced a Central (5-2, 1-2) punt, and Blood connected with Emery, Quincy Brown and Carson Rieder through the air to set up another Emery score, this one from eight yards away to make it 28-7.

With just seconds left to play in the first quarter, a punt team miscue resulted in a safety for the Wildcats, making it 30-7.

Perhaps the most glaring sign of how the night would be came as time expired in the opening quarter, with Dontrell Smith returning the safety kickoff all the way, crossing the goal line as the horn to end the quarter blared along with the excited cheers of the DHS fans in attendance. That made it 37-7 as the second quarter began.

The Wildcats added two more touchdowns in the second quarter to round out the scoring, but things were all but decided after the first 12 minutes.
